Lay the two lines alongside each other, the working ends pointing in opposite directions. Loop each line around the other, as shown in the photograph.
Vice Versa: Step 2
Bring the working end of one line through the loop in the other line (from back to front), as shown in the photograph.
Its first appearance in print seems to be from Harry Asher in The Alternative Knot Book (1989), but it, or something very similar, probably saw use by mariners before that. This bend may also be used by climbers.
